少年ハート

You gotta remember 今も 夢のかけらを手に~

現実と理想の狭間揺らいだ 情熱の炎も消えかかった

Heh. Lyrics from a song I was listening to while driving back to the OC from LA. Dreams indeed. Its so hard to hold onto them these days. To focus on something and just be crazy about it ... where did that passion go? A flicker still remains ... barely.

Of course it goes on to say ...

咲かそう 咲かそう 咲かそう 情熱の花を咲かそう

探そう 探そう 探そう 夢のかけらを探そう

Its such an upbeat optomistic song. It really makes me want to believe in innocence, courage, and growing childhood passions haha. Finding pieces of your dreams ... scattered about wherever you go

Recently I've been doing some introspective thinking since I have a little free time this week with school being canceled because of the fires and all. I'm sort of a private person. I have my passions and whatnot but share it with only a small circle of people. Earlier this week someone commented that he wanted to old Kevin back and not the "depressed and ... ..." me haha. More like deflated than depressed lol. More like setting myself up, not for failure, but just accepting that one of the things on my mind probably isn't going to go the way I hope it to lol

Anyways, he knows that i'm crazy about golf. Others know that I love snowboarding. I suck at both but are crazy about both nevertheless. I'd play golf every day of the year and snowboard every weekend of the year if I could (although I sort of did do that during my year off haha ... went snowboarding a couple times a week at times). I like tennis but have no one to hit with :( I've come to realize that my passion for these hobbies stem from sharing these experiences with other people. Thats what makes it so fun and memorable.

Passion for music. Music is beautiful. I wish I could learn every instrument and sing perfectly but I don't have the crazy talent or abundance of time to do that sort of thing. All I can do is try to regain the skills I used to have from playing violin during whatever spare time I have. Language is also like music to my ears. One day I want to truely learn Mandarin, Japanese, Italian, and French fluently but some people tell me it'll be impossible when I get older ... and that I'm already too old haha. It doesn't hurt to try does it? :)

What about my passion for learning? what ever happened to that. I don't really know ... I still like learning but the effort I put into studying is so half-assed that its disappointing. Its not that I don't like the sciency material but more like ... I'm tired of this "school/academic" phase and just want to move onto the next phase of my life. Work towards financial independence, settle down in a life near civilization (anywhere without good dim sum is now labeled as the boonies in my eyes after spending over a year in san diego... mainly want sha zhan fen), and good ol' fashioned love (haha does that even exist anymore?)

Ahhhh that brings us to the passion for romance. Where be this mystery element. Well seeing how I have no gf or anything I'll just leave this blank. My secret for now! heehee :P

Anyhow ... The song really brings back memories of times when I was passionate about everything haha. Ahh what a naive little boy i was. good times fun times. The memories sorta make me want to go to disneyland for fun again but AH! ... no gf and i'd rather not be the creepy old guy there lol. I'll just have to stick to golf, snowboarding, and soon-to-be mountain biking for now~

Goals for end of 2007. Shoot under 85. 360 jump without landing on my ass. and get around to actually buying a decent bike. Shooting under 85 is going to be especially hard since my long iron game is so inconsistent. My putting could use some work too. Maybe it's time to start getting some lessons.

Anyways thats enough ranting for now. Irvine's so boring ... look how long my post was lol.

Hmm ... faint bbq smell here in irvine and newport. gets worse near aliso ... little bits of ash raining down occasionally.

there's already a faint layer of ash outside my house in irvine. took some pics but not sure if you can see anything. don't have a usb cable right now though :-/

Map of SD fires

here's a nice google map of the fires and other random stuff in the SD area. apparently there are 18 fires now in socal according to the governator

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&time=&date=&ttype=&ie=UTF8&om=1&msa=0&msid=114250687465160386813.00043d08ac31fe3357571&ll=32.990236,-116.732483&spn=1.442114,1.697388&z=9

Road closages

Wow ... sort of glad we left on monday to go play golf. Just found out that the I-5 was closed this morning at 1 AM due to the fires at camp pendleton. apparently the fires extend all the way to the border patrol station on the I-5 (which is pretty far north for those who know where it is). I-5 is closed in both directions so I can't go down and pick up stuff anymore :(

trains are also stopped between the OC and SD county since I guess the fires have spread too far north and west in the camp pendleton area. wtf

10-24-07 3:51 a.m.
CAMP PENDLETON FIRE UPDATE: The Horno Fire at Camp Pendleton has burned 6000 acres and is moving north and west between Las Pulgas Road and the Border Patrol Checkpoint. Camp Pendleton requested the closure of train service, and Metrolink has confirmed that service is shut down from Oceanside to San Clemente

bleh, stuck up here with only enough clothes for two days. guess its time to go shopping!!!

Smokey the Bear says...

Slightly hazy sun in La Jolla ... not sure why the sun is LUMPY but whatever, maybe its just a weird smoke effect

You can barely see the smoke in the distance while in La Jolla ... it's not that bad but it stinks!

Sort of foggy-ish in the distance on the way out from La Jolla. Smoke cloud seems to be getting higher...

Visibility down to maybe half a mile ... and in we go!

Two pics of the Del Mar racetrack/fairgrounds right next to the 5... supposed to be one of the major evacuation spots for people to go to but as you can see, its pretty much crap here.
Traffic is a little worse than normal, i wonder why.................... hmm

Oy are we heading INTO the fire? naww ... i don't think we're that dumb or suicidal ;)

Such a change from the La Jolla sun haha. oh it gets better!

Silly person with his window rolled down the entire time ... the only thing worse would be to smoke a cigarette at the same time...

Wait a minute ... are you sure we're not driving into the fire? Is this a lemming scenario where we all drive aimlessly into the smoke until we're engulfed with flames????

Haha the sun looks soooo far away now. it's like doomsday. it doesn't even look like the sun anymore

A close up pic of the sun. Looks weird huh?

The OC! clean(er) air haha. and we can see the sun again

Maroon 5~

Hmm ... Maroon 5 is playing at the staple center on Nov 8 ... <3 maroon 5 almost as much as i like Muse hehe

I may be able to get up to 4 tickets, floor seats. anybody interested? IM, call, or e-mail me :)

San Di-Ego is Bur-ning Down!

So I wake up this morning and the sunrise looks crazy. there's a band of orange with the sun then a complete separate band of blue above it with no smoke at all. I go out and my car is covered with ash ...

on the way to school i get a text msg saying school was canceled. after wasting time in the morning and finding out school was canceled on tuesday too, warren decides that we should go to LA to play golf. after spending 4 and a half hours in the car stuck in traffic, we finally reach arcadia and got some food. anyhow took some pics on the way up and i'll post em up later. sun blocked out and all haha

Bikes!!! update

I think I'm leaning towards the Forge bike since it seems like it got really good reviews especially for the price ... Kona bike is just so sexy tho haha. too bad the 2008 model costs $949 USD but comes in red!

Bikes!!!

Sooooo... been looking out mountain bikes with the help of someone from HS who's also new-ish to mountain biking in the SD area. Here's just a couple of the bikes I've been shown/looking at/considering. of course there are more but i'm just looking for a decent entry-level bike. as much as i like the caldera i probably won't get it haha but who knows. I'll try out my friend's caldera and see how it rides :P maybe i'll fall in love with it and just have to get one hehe (and honestly, i already think the caldera is hot, just might be really hard to find since it's a 2007 model ... my friend drove from SD to corona to buy the last one lol) wheeee. looks like fun

laundromat!!

woooooow ... one load of laundry costs 1.75 to wash and then 25 cents/8 min to dry. talk about a rip off.

at least i had a fairly semi-productive afternoon until i realized i didn't bring out the unknown key to grade the lab reports lol

laundromat

omg, washing machine is broken in the house so now I have to go to a laundromat. I guess that means I'll finally get some grading done since I'll be stranded without internet while the clothes wash/dry. No more distracting myself! haha

Mission Stencil Story

what a cute little concept haha... randomly ran into this. copy/pasted the description from the site (http://www.flickr.com/photos/9793231@N05/sets/72157600706628117/)
i want to go follow all four of the stories lol. I guess i'll add that to my list of things to do when i go to SF again, if it's still there...

"The mission stencil story is an interactive, choose-your-own-adventure story that takes place on the sidewalks of the Mission district in San Francisco. It is told in a new medium of storytelling that uses spraypainted stencils connected to each other by arrows. The streetscape is used as sort of an illustration to accompany each piece of text.
Its a love story with 2 characters who start in different locations. His story starts at 16th and Valencia, in front of the Crown Hotel / Limon Restaurant with the text "He Leaves his Lonely Apartment." Her story starts at 21st and Guerrero in front of a stunning mansion with the text, "She Leaves her Lonely Apartment." Eventually their paths merge, at the point where they meet, and their paths travel together until drama pulls them apart.

There are two possible endings, happy and tragic, and two other points where the story can end unexpectedly if the viewer chooses the wrong ending. All in all, there are 4 possible endings."
it just makes you want to go "awww" "awwww" and "awwww" in 3 different ways lol. sorry, can't really convey tones and stuff very well over the internet :P

sorry about the blog spam :) sitting around in the library waiting for my lab to start so i can go torture some more pre-meds haha. jkjk

anyways, was randomly browsing the feed on my RSS thing and saw an article about Sony and Toshiba. so i click and read and find this little gem ...

"Separately, Sony said it will rely on IBM (Charts, Fortune 500) for developing and manufacturing the futuristic chip called 45-nanometer"

LOOOOOOOOOOOL. who the heck wrote this? there's no author listed on the article but it came from CNNMoney. THE futuristic chip called 45-nanometer ... hahahahahahaah silly analysts

wow, who would have thought that such a great idea would be fail so miserably ... I was actually looking forward to this. I'm not diabetic or anything but it just seemed like one of those innovations which would make life a little simpler for diabetics out there

Drug earnings: Good, bad and ugly

Pfizer yanks Exubera off the market and takes $2.8B charge; Novartis cutting 1,260 jobs with 12% dive in profit; Baxter stock up 7% on strong earnings.

By Aaron Smith, CNNMoney.com staff writer

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- A slew of Big Pharma earnings reports from five lead drugmakers Thursday looks like the title cast from "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly."

Eli Lilly & Co. (Charts, Fortune 500) and Baxter Pharmaceuticals (Charts, Fortune 500) reported "good" earnings for the third quarter, resulting from strong sales of Lilly's anti-psychotic Zyprexa and Baxter's anti-hemophilia drugs Advate. Also, Lilly raised its adjusted earnings outlook for all of 2007 to between $3.50 and $3.55 per share.

Baxter's stock surged 7 percent on the news, while Lilly made only slight gains.

Wyeth (Charts, Fortune 500) - the "bad," but not that bad - announced a slight dip in earnings, despite strong sales. The primary reason: because of charges from the closing of a factory that makes Enbrel, its drug for rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis. Wyeth stock dipped slightly.

The ugliest results came from Pfizer Inc., (Charts, Fortune 500) the world's largest company that derives all its sales from pharmaceuticals, and Swiss drug giant Novartis (Charts).

New York-based Pfizer said it's abandoning its inhalable insulin product Exubera, and incurred a $2.8 billion charge as it broke off all investments to the program. Exubera, a needle-free method of taking insulin, was once considered by analysts to be a potential billion-dollar blockbuster.

But Exubera, a tube-shaped dispenser for powered insulin, failed to win the hearts and minds of diabetics, with one diabetic journalist comparing the device to a "bong."

"Despite our best efforts, Exubera has failed to gain acceptance of patients and physicians," said Pfizer chief executive Jeffrey Kindler in an earnings release, noting that he "initially had high expectations" for inhalable insulin. "We have therefore concluded that further investment in this product is unwarranted."

While the failure of Exubera came as no surprise, the timing of its withdrawal seemed abrupt, said Robert Hazlett, analyst for BMO Capital Markets.

"Given the lack of success of the product, we might have thought something would occur down the road a bit, but the timing itself was a bit surprising to a number of us in the [analyst] community," said Hazlett.

Also, Pfizer said it was pressured by declining sales to its flagship drug Lipitor, a treatment for high cholesterol. As a result, Pfizer profit wase less than $800 million, a mere fraction of the $3.4 billion in profit from the year-earlier quarter.

Nonetheless, Pfizer remains a relatively secure company, said Barbara Ryan, analyst for Deutsche Bank North America, in a published note to investors.

Ryan said that Pfizer shares "will trade like a Treasury bond in the near term, until, in our view, a substantial commercial acquisition is made" which would "dilute" the company's dependence on the declining Lipitor. The patent for Lipitor expires in 2011, with an expected hemorrhage in sales.

Novartis, based in Basel, said it was cutting 1,260 jobs in the U.S., with most of the job cuts resulting from attrition, rather than lay-offs. Novartis suffered a 12 percent dive in profit, excluding proceeds from the sale of nutrition units to Nestle, despite a 9 percent gain in revenue.

Novartis chief executive Daniel Vassella said the pain of the third quarter was from a necessary reorganization of the company.

"Following the successful divestments of the Medical Nutrition and Gerber businesses [to Nestle] we are now strategically focused on health care and products," said Vassella, in an earnings release.

Investors seemed unfazed by the "ugly" news, with moderate stock gains for Pfizer and Novartis.

The analyst quoted in this story do not own stock in the companies they discussed, but Deutsche Bank seeks investment banking business with the companies it covers.

bullshit.

You have a first instinct for a reason, you know.
Stop second guessing yourself.
Your first choices are solid.

i second guess because i don't like my first instinct haha, or rather i like the other option(s) so so so much more

The running chip

Played a semi-decent round of golf yesterday and my chipping was amazing ... so much luck, i wonder what i did to deserve such good karma. made some adjustments to my game, mostly to do with my mental game rather than my swing techniques.

anyhow, found this article today while surfing the net (grading quizzes is so boring!). I think it might be helpful for some of you. its a good read and you should read it. yes you know who you are. stop being lazy and asking me to paraphrase/teach it haha :P

RUNNING CHIP
Prepared by: Binh Nguyen
Email: dtbnguyen(at)gmail(dot)com

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this article is to provide details of several methods on playing the running chip shot. These ideas have been drawn from my own personal experimentation, golf articles that I have happened to come across, as well as shots that I may have seen whether they may have been from amateur or professional players.

Please note that I am not a professional golfer or instructor nor do I have intention becoming one. Golf was and continues to remain a marvellous curiosity in my life and will continue to remain so. If possible and whenever there are competent and ethical professionals near by, by all means seek their help. They have spent years studying existing methodologies and understand what techniques may suit your existing physical and mental capabilities.

This document will be updated over time as new theories come to light.

RUNNING CHIP

The running chip is perhaps one of the easiest shots that the golfer will ever learn and yet time and time again it seems as though I see my playing partners either scull their chips across the green or leave the shot short. There are many different ways to play this shot and this document will touch on some of my favoured methods of playing it. However, all of these shots have one fundamentals to them. Your wrists should never break but your hands, arms, and shoulders should remain relatively 'soft'.

The reason why I believe that the hands, arms, and shoulders should remain relatively 'soft' is because unbalanced tension can result in drastic changes in your takeaway and subsequently your swing. For example, tense up your right arm while maintaining light tension in your left side and attempt to start your backswing. You'll notice that your takeaway will tend to come back inside. Obviously, the converse will be true if you attempt to do the opposite.

Reducing tension in your body quite simply makes it easier for you to reproduce a single swing path which makes all shots thereafter much more predictable.

While many teachers advocate having a completely still head for these type of shots I believe that this only pertains to shorter shots. On longer shots I find it far easier to control distance if I let the head and upper torso rotate at the same radial velocity as the the golf club. Doing so mitigates the chances that the head and neck introduces some resistance to the movement of the clubhead which would make distance control less predictable.

There should also be a minimal amount of weight shift as this could potentially make distance control far more difficult (most teachers advocate placing your weight forward and leaving it there but I've found that moving it around and keeping your weight stable can have the same effect with an added benefit – trajectory control (please check the author's website for further details in the article entitled 'Shot Shaping').

The generally accepted method of playing this shot though is to have a slightly open stance, with your weight over the front foot (and keeping it there throughout the shot), play the ball slightly further back in your stance than centre, and use your shoulders and arms to control the distance that the shot travels. My only problem with this method is that it can sometimes result in backspin (due to the steep angle of attack that the club travels down on the ball from because it is placed further back in the stance) which can make the roll of the ball difficult to predict after it hits the ground. Having a slightly open stance can also wreak havoc with your alignment if you do not play or practice regularly and have therefore not adapted to having such a stance.

My preferred method to play this shot is to play it from a square stance, balanced weight, with the ball slightly forward of the middle of my stance with light grip pressure while using a reverse overlap (a putter type grip) (if you feel more comfortable using a conventional swing grip or any other type of grip for that matter then please feel free to use it. I often use an interlocking grip on longer shots as I find it difficult to develop power using a reverse overlap grip). You then control the distance that the ball will travel by either changing the length of your backswing and follow through (which is controlled primarily by your shoulders) or changing the speed at which your shoulders and arms swing the club). To ensure that there is a minimal amount of backspin on the shot please ensure that the clubhead remains close to the ground at all times and that you maintain a relatively constant tempo. This ensures that you do not 'descend' on the shot which could create unwanted backspin and reduce the predictability of the roll once the ball hits the ground.

Another method that I've come across is quite difficult to perfect but can produce good results if you do not find the previous two methods to your liking. You basically have an open stance, with your weight on your front foot, with a slightly backward of centre ball position, take the club back, let it drop back towards the ball, and then push the butt of the club slightly (using your hands) forward on the way down which will allow you to control the distance that the ball
travels.

Finally, for those people who have a tendency to 'control' their shots via their hands a shot you should try is a variation of the 'bunt' shot in baseball. You basically play with an open stance, with your weight on your front foot, with a centre ball position. You take the club back and then 'bunt' (decelerate immediately after you hit the ball) the ball forward. The only problem with this shot is that it can be sometimes difficult to predict if you are playing out of particularly thick
'rough' or 'fringe' grass.

It should be noted that this type of shot can be played with virtually any club in your bag. For instance, Chi Chi Rodriguez often used a 7-wood to chip while other professional players today may use anything from a wedge, iron, hybrid, or wood (few people use the driver or 1-wood to chip obviously due to its size and the length of the shaft which would make it awkward to chip with) to chip with.

On the other hand, it is patently clear that some people find that mastering a single club for all shots makes life easier and is less time consuming (to learn and select when the time comes for club selection) for them and use. The only problem with this approach is that it can make 'running' or 'lofting' the shot somewhat awkward at times. For example, it is far easier to run a shot using a short iron than a wedge (even if you place the ball backwards in your stance to lower the ballflight). For this reason, I advocate the use of at least three clubs to chip with. One should be a wedge (for slightly lofted shots), another should be a short iron (which will give you a combination of loft and roll), and finally one should be a mid-iron or hybrid (which will give you a trajectory that is based primarily around roll).

Like other golf shots can change the height of the shot by simply changing the ball position of the shot (further forward for higher ballflight and further backward for lower ballflight) (For further information on trajectory manipulation please see the document entitled “Shot Shaping” at the author's website).

Overall, this is a very simple shot. However, like many other worthwhile things in life it does requires work/practice in order to perfect especially with regards to how far the ball should land in front of the hole before 'releasing'. Hopefully, some time on the practice green will ensure that you develop a feel of how much this distance actually is.

omg ... i watched some perfect date game show thing that the United Taiwanese Association (??) held today at the price center ... and o m g

haven't heard that much mandarin non-stop for yeeeeeears. my head was buzzing by the end of the show and about to burn out. guess that means i should practice my mandarin more before i lose it forever ...

and wooooooooow fobs (are they fobs? okay maybe nathan or whatever his name was isn't a fob) looooove their karoake/singing. Seems like at least half if not more chose to sing for their "talent" portion of the show.

anyhow, just had a passion fruit black tea a couple hours ago so i don't think i'll be able to sleep tonight ... damn those midnight boba runs! haha

laa dee da da~ my head is still buzzing

Crazy (boredom) talk

Life has no point.
so life is round.
therefore life may be circular or cyclic.

no point, no point at all ... lol. i make no sense hehe

kevin is a sad monkey but happy pig :(

母性本能くすぐるトーク (UH HUH!)

its so foggy this morning. its even in my bathroom haha, anyways ...

僕君のことよく知らないけれど 何かトキメいてます~

is that really true? i don't think so but you never know... the presence of the possibility keeps lingering in my head ugh. like a fog i can't find my way through because i have no direction. it sort of describes my situation except maybe not quite as strongly. its still just as crazy though ... "見つめっぱなし たまんねぇ女神" (lol, i know it sounds silly but i cant help it) would give me some direction but ... yea, i won't elaborate for now. my thoughts on this are all over the place and not really all that optomistic :P

now that I have a lab and a project (yay? just learned about it last night), using a technique involving e- beam lithography to create specific protein patterns for directing skeletal myoblast differentiation and organization, maybe I can find my way out of this fog and not become a complete shipwreck. distraction. distraction. distraction.

There's always a siren
Singing you to shipwreck

but ... ...
You gotta remember 今も 夢のかけらを手に ... hehe, if only that came true :-) i'd be so happy haha

The egg has been fried

First hell will have to freeze over. Then the canary will eat the cat. After that, another sinking of the unsinkable Titanic, followed by the cow jumping over the moon. All to be concluded by a squadron of flying pigs circling over my house. And then we can enjoy some of that moon cheese the cow so kindly brought back...

THAT will be the day. i give up.

(i had a funny story to tell about this morning's adventures in o-chem lab but i've completely forgotten what i was going to write due to ... well whatever bleh)

THE monkey wrench

i am sabatoging myself. hmmmmm...

San Diego Film Festival

yay! 2 more days until the film festival starts ... here's a couple blurbs/synopsis on movies we might watch, but not just limited to these few movies. ahhhhh so many to watch~~ :)

Shanghai Kiss
Liam Liu is a struggling actor who passes time by picking up beautiful, vapid girls in hip Hollywood bars. The closest thing to an emotional connection in Liam's life is a flirtatious friendship with 16 year old Adelaide (Hayden Panettiere, NBC's "Heroes"), a precocious high school girl who is actually more mature than Liam. When Liam learns he has inherited his grandmother's home in Shanghai, China, he travels to the exotic city and discovers a profound connection to his family legacy. Liam meets a sophisticated Chinese woman there named Micki (Kelly Hu, "The Scorpion King" & "X2") and finds himself falling into instant infatuation with her. Liam decides to move to China, leaving behind Adelaide who is quite possibly the only girl who has ever loved him. He suddenly finds himself at a crossroads - does he choose this new exotic world full of wonders or does he go back to America and make an honest attempt to put his life in order?Written and co-directed by David Ren, this inspired Asian American romantic comedy features winning performances by Ken Leung ("X-Men" & "Sopranos") who deftly brings the comedic timing and charm of a younger Billy Crystal to his portrayal of Liam. Hayden Panettiere and Kelly Hu both shine as Liam's romantic interests. SHANGHAI KISS world premiered at the 2007 San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival to rave reviews.

Air Guitar Nation

A battle of naked ambition played out on the national and, ultimately, world stage, AIR GUITAR NATION chronicles the birth of the U.S. Air Guitar Championships. Legions of aspiring rock stars live out their dreams on a quest to become the world champion in a strange world where musical ability plays second fiddle to virtual virtuosity (think "American Idol" meets a Star Trek convention). Two aspiring rock legends strum and strut their way towards glory and the coveted national title. C. Diddy (David Jung), a Korean American samurai warrior clad in a Hello Kitty breast plate and red kimono, emerges as an early favorite. But his arch nemesis, Bjorn Turoque (Dan Crane), is not far behind. While C. Diddy threatens to unleash his self-professed "Asian Fury" on his competitors, Bjorn vows to take Diddy down. As the film reaches its climax, the future of Air hangs in the balance. Will Bjorn's technical prowess, stage presence, and "airness" be enough to take him to the top, or will C. Diddy conquer all to become America's first supreme being of Air Guitar? One contestant says it best, "To err is human; to air guitar is divine.Full of triumph and hilarity, patriotic spirit and competition, AIR GUITAR NATION won the coveted Best Audience Award at the SXSW Film Festival and is quickly spawning a cult following in both the film and the artform.

Hula Girls

Based on a true story, HULA GIRLS is a heartwarming comedy about coal miners' daughters who took a once-in-a-lifetime chance to escape their monotonous lives, only to become unwitting heroes to their depressed mining town as well as the whole of Japan.Iwaki is a remote mining town in northern Japan that would be right at home in America's rust belt, and with its coal mine closing, its future looks grim. In a desperate attempt to save the local economy the town elders decide to cash in on the Polynesian craze that is sweeping the world (the movie is set in 1965) and so they announce they are building a Hawaiian theme park, complete with a hula dancing troupe. The only problem: no one in Iwaki knows how to dance the hula. Also: no one in Iwaki has ever been to Hawaii. Actually, no one in Iwaki has ever really left the city limits. And once they import an alcoholic hula teacher from Tokyo who's on the run from bad debts, things get worse as the respectable local women refuse to participate in "indecent" hula dancing and the only people who sign up for the classes are a handful of misfits.Do these kids get it together and become a crack hula team? You bet! Korean-Japanese director Lee Sang-Il (Scrap Heaven) rewrites the conventions of the "team of underdog" genre (see: The Full Monty) and reminds us of why they worked in the first place. It's not hard to see why this flick rocked the Japanese box office and swept the Japanese Academy Awards: it's managed the neat trick of telling an old story in a new way and reminding its audience that there's nothing to be ashamed of if you come out of a movie feeling good about life and wanting to put on a lei and a tapa and swing your hips to a hula mele.

5 centimeters per second

Achingly beautiful, 5CM PER SECOND, breaks new ground in anime in both artistry and storytelling. Named for the speed at which cherry blossom petals fall, 5CM PER SECOND consists of three segments and follows a boy named Takaki through his life, first as a middle school student, through high school, and as an adult working as a computer programmer. Delicate, powerful, and heartrending, each segment explores the complex nature of human beings, giving viewers a familiar and real world perspective of the struggles we face against time, space, people, and love. Masterfully crafted with every second counting, this is a film that will certainly stay with you for days.Director Makoto Shinkai has been called the new Hayao Miyazaki in several reviews including Anime Advocates and ActiveAnime.
Preceded by: VOICES OF A DISTANT STARDirectors: Makoto Shinkai, Steven Foster 30 min. Video 2003When the alien Tarsians attack, Mikako volunteers to be a pilot in the UN space force that will protect mankind. Seperated from his girlfirend, the two try to remain in contact using by sending text messages, but as each battle takes Mikako further from the Earth, each message takes longer to arrive. Will their love stand the tests of time and distance?

West 32nd

Director Michael Kang returns to the SDAFF with his latest feature, WEST 32ND, a thriller set in New York's Korea Town, starring an impressive cast of Korean American and international stars. This feature marks the first American production of CJ Entertainment, Korea's largest entertainment company. After hustling his way onto a pro-bono homicide case, an ambitious young lawyer John Kim (John Cho) infiltrates the gritty Korean underworld of New York, searching for clues. The murder suspect is a teenager charged with gunning down the manager of a Korean "saloon room" club. The boy's sister, Lila Lee (Grace Park) is sure of his innocence and will sacrifice anything to save him. John feels connected to Lila and is determined to help. Though Korean American, John barely knows how to speak Korean and finds himself a foreigner in K-town's exciting nightlife. He befriends Mike Juhn, a well-dressed, ruthless gangster newly in charge of the Korean club where the murder took place. Before he knows it, John is neck-deep in the gang-related politics of K-town, and his dangerous search for answers often gets lost in translation. Having premiered at this year's Tribeca Film Festival to sold-out audiences, Kang and his cowriter Edmund Lee, expose the darker side of Koreatown with twists and turns that leave the audience wondering who to trust.

Dark Matter

New York based Chinese opera director Chen Shi-zheng makes his first feature film debut with DARK MATTER which follows a Chinese science student pursuing a PhD studying the origins of the universe in the US during the early 90s. The Mid-Western Valley State University cosmology student, Liu Xing, dreams of winning the Nobel Prize by attempting to unravel the secrets of dark matter, that mysterious substance that governs the universe. Liu finds a remarkable amount of freedom in the US and initially finds it exciting, but as time passes he finds himself struggling as an alien in a new environment. He develops a connection with a generous socialite played by Meryl Streep who helps him in his transition into American society. Liu becomes protege to head of the cosmology department Jacob Reiser, played by Aidan Quinn, who threatens to thwart Liu's aspirations with campus politics when it becomes clear that Liu's developing theories oppose Reiser's models. Eventually Liu gets pushed to the margins of academia and society after he goes behind Reiser's back to publish his discoveries. Alone and unsupported, Liu finally explodes with vengeful hostility in a final and chilling act of violence.DARK MATTER is based on the true story of a disgruntled physics student from China who killed 6 people at the Iowa University of Iowa in 1991. It is a remarkable surprise that any filmmaker would even approach the subject of a tragic campus shooting from the gunman's point of view, but even more surprising that it is executed so well, with a certain elegance and sense of honesty. Add to that an outstanding performance by newcomer Ye Liu, DARK MATTER proves to be as mesmerizing a film as the universe itself.

Beta

Walter is a man lost in a sea of confusion, headaches and strange visions of fish.

I'm a Cyborg But That's OK

Young-goon (Lim Su-jeong, TALE OF TWO SISTERS) is girl who believes that she is a cyborg who must avenge her grandmother. When she is admitted to a psychiatric ward, Young-goon meets Il-soon (Korean pop star Rain), a handsome young man who thinks that he can steal people's souls. Young-goon and Il-soon immediately connect emotionally, and become drawn into a romantic relationship. However, Young-goon refuses to eat food because she believes that as a cyborg, she needs only electrical charges from a transistor radio to survive. As Young-goon's physical condition continues to deteriorate due to malnutrition and electric shock treatments, Il-soon enlists the help his fellow patients to save her life. Not since ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST, has a films so engrossingly taken viewers deep into the minds of the mentally ill, without an ounce of condescendence. Director Park Chan-wook (OLDBOY, JSA) affirms his place among the world's greatest filmmakers, by straying far from his ultra-violence image to create a world that is at the same time breathtaking in its visual brilliance and humorously quirky. Rain, Time Magazine's most influential person of 2007, is spectacular in his feature film debut and his co-star Lim Su-jeong demonstrates why she is one of the top young actresses in Asia. The winner of the Alfred Bauer Award at the 57th Berlin International Film Festival is a film filled with unforgettable moments and should not be missed by any person who loves films.

omg focus! pt 3

wow. so far this week, i've pretty much forgotten/broken every routine I usually do without thinking ... even every single battery operated device I have is completely dead, 0% batteries.

Its like i'm going through the motions but not. I'm forgetting the most mundane details that i shouldn't have to think about to remember.

Also getting sort of sick again ...

so tired and cold~ and no i'm not an old boring grandpa haha so stop calling me that

anyhow, there's an asian film festival this week and next week (Oct 11-18), if anyone's interested in going just let me know. Already know someone interested in coming down to see hula girls and 5 cm/sec (dunno what those are about but oh well, he knows). it'll be fun. some of these films were shown at the LA asian film festival back in may and got very high reviews. Looking forward to relaxing and unwinding a bit this week :)

omg focus!

wow ... just freaking unbelievable. i don't know where my brain's gone but i want it back, NOW!

this morning i drove to school, forgot my keys to the lab, drove home, picked them up, drove to school, parked, walked across campus, realized i forgot my keys in the car, walked all the way back across campus, picked up the keys, walked across campus again, realized i forgot my labcoat and goggles, walked all the way back across campus *again* ... picked up all the stuff and here i am now. now I'm really hungry haha, grumbling stomache and all

its like i can't focus on the task in front of me, whats happening lol. at least im not performing any surgery or anything today :]

edit: guess i'm not the only one who isn't thinking today. some random person walked into the lab I was TA'ing this morning and didn't react/realize he walked through the wrong door until he was like 15 feet into the room and recognized no one haha

Wednesday, October 3, 2007

Yay for yesterdays

haha alliteration sorta ...

anyways, been chatting with a friend about all the random stuff we used to do in HS and undergrad and theres so much stuff that I've forgotten. fun times lol. she even had some random AIM logs from way back in 2004 or whenever the hell jay chou came to the USC area from some old xanga stuff or something like that. random convos I don't even remember ever having...

her: are you going to jay chou's concert at the shrine?
me: shrine auditorium?
me: as in the one i live across the street from?
her: uh-huh
me: :/
me: great
her: wanna go stalk him for me
me: screaming mass of fans in december
me: i hope my finals are over before then
her: at least they'll all be little asian girls
me: lol
her: you should go
her: you like jay chou right?
me: mm
me: not really?
me: i only heard like, one of his songs once
me: for 30 seconds
her: haha ok fine never mind
her: fine, maybe not jay chou
her: but you like little asian girls yea?

how times have changed ... jay chou is going to play near USC again this december except this time I actually listen to his stuff and have most of his albums hahaha *gasp!* I don't think, back then, I could have predicted such a dramatic shift in my music collection in such a short time...

I guess you never know whats in store for your near future despite how absurd things may sound. It's only been, what, two or three years since I graduated and so much has changed. I guess the most glaring change in my overall life philosophy/outlook is that I'm not genuinely "happy", per se. But I guess thats part of growing up and also due to keeping everything pent up haha. I used to talk too much and made some, okay a lot, of mistakes because of my big mouth (lol, it was like oral ADHD on overdrive). Now I'm like the total opposite and try to keep everything to myself but I guess I'd better change again and find a balance between the two. I'll try. I'm trying. :)

Like someone recently told me (okay i'm bending your words just a tad), i gain nothing from keeping it all pent up and its robbing me of what my life could be.

But still ... Once bitten, twice shy.

on a side note: went shopping today and picked up a spiffy new 52 vokey :D

Neutered Dame?

NEWS BRIEF: Cleveland, Ohio (AP) – A seven-year old boy was at the center of a Cuyahoga County, Ohio courtroom drama yesterday when he challenged, through a Court-appointed guardian ad litem, a Court ruling over who should have custody of him. The boy has a history of being beaten by his parents and the judge initially awarded custody to his aunt, in keeping with child custody statutes and established precedent requiring that family unity be maintained to the highest degree possible. The boy surprised the Court when he proclaimed that his aunt beat him more than his parents and he adamantly refused to live with her. When the judge then suggested that he live with his grandparents, the boy cried and said that they also beat him. After considering the remainder of the boy’s immediate family and learning that domestic violence was apparently a way of life among them, the judge took the unprecedented step of allowing the boy himself to propose who should have custody of him. After two recesses to check legal references and confer with child welfare officials, the judge granted temporary custody to the University of Notre Dame football team, whom the Court determined is not capable of beating anyone.

quite a shame ND sucks so much now ... such a huge drop off from the starters last year to the replacements this year. I guess Weis isnt much of a college coach. I've heard some stories about their practices how Chuck only concentrates on the starters and gives no guidance or attention to the backups/underclassmen/walk-ons since thats what he did in the pros. Heh, not a great plan to follow when you're constantly replacing your players.

I've also heard reports on how jimmy clausen walks around campus with a hooded sweatshirt pulled over his head and with his head down all the time. Trying to shoulder all the blame/take responsibility for all of ND's problems is just too much for a freshman :-/ its not even his fault. poor jimmy...

Reality is like an illusion

Apologies for my outburst/rant... Thanks A for hearing me out and letting me dumping my thoughts on you. You're a great listener as always and I'll try to take some of your advice. Thank you~

I know I already thanked you earlier tonight but you know that someone can never give enough thanks :)

Can you imagine your reality?

sad puppy is thinking "what's the point?"

The Great Wall of Mao(?)

so I get home today from a 12+ hour day at school and i see this blinking on my screen...

j: wtf
j: dude
me (auto reply): uh okay ... i have a bloody finger and i cant find a cut anywhere on me ... wtf? bbl, i actually have CLASSES today O_O
j: i bought a t-shirt with Mao's face on it
j: in hong kong
j: and my parents freaked out when they saw it
j: and they threw it away

HAHAHAHAHAHAH. i choked on my boba when i saw this. it was read ... read ... read ... pause ... CHOKE. for a second there i thought it said yao, as in yao ming lol

and soooo ... i fall asleep dreaming of the days long past, the days to come, and the days that will never come to pass~ haha
g'night *yaaaawn*
If only ZZZZzzzzzzzz..... was a real word, then I would kick ass at Scrabble. unfortunately it's not so i don't kick ass :)

Rock on semi-circles

omg ... so the horoscope on facebook randomly changed again today (i don't get how/when it changes, it just does) and it said ...

You're about to come into some extra cash,
but be careful how you spend it.
Using it all now would not be wise.

Wow. thats all I can say. How'd it know I just picked up a check for ~6G's this morning haha. horoscopes are scary, the one before this was a bit depressing but somehow they're always freakishly accurate for being "random" and very broad. Thats like four in a row. I like the money ones better than the relationship ones tho. Seems like all my luck is with money, i have no luck with girls lol ;) ahhh facebook is such an awesome way to kill time in between classes

oh yea, tip. never ever bet on USC during the PAC-10 season opener because they'll never cover the spread. I dont think they have once in the past 6 or 7 years yet people still put big money down on USC lol

in closing, I love blackjack. But I'm not addicted to gambling. I'm addicted to sitting in a semi-circle~
